Going down under, around the bushes & over seas

Sweet memories

Happened while passing a house in Izmir…

When a loved one and a member of the community passes away, there are certain days when the family, relatives and friends gathers together.

If not now, then when?

Friends keep asking how we dare to plan an around the world trip, especially with small kids.. Some call us crazy, some call us brave.. I don’t know what we are, but here is how we made our minds:

Couple of months ago, one afternoon we started to talk with Nico how wonderful it would be to take a break and travel around the world. Then we started to think why we cannot do it. Would it be too irresponsible? Could we afford it? Would it be too dangerous? How about the girls’ school? How about our jobs?

Breakfast at Makah

It’s our fourth day of traveling. We had the privilege to leave kids to Izmir at grandparents and head to Cesme. It’s a well known town at the Alacati peninsula, area which multiplies it’s inhabitants during the summer time.

Here’s how we did it

To be honest, I am pretty proud of the result. After carefully selecting the items we divided the stuff so that one adult and one kid is in one big bag. Back bag holds all the items for the road & flights, like extra clothes for kids, book, toys etc & the small one is packed by the kids. I honestly don’t even know what it contains, but it must be something important. They took the task very seriously, but we think it was a good way to get them buzzed about the trip.

We tried to pack clothes which works well as layers. Our route goes from South of Turkey to Thailand’s Northern forests to cities and countrysides of Australia, all the way down to Tasmania and South of New Zealand & Pacific Islands. So we are expecting the weather to change from rainy to warm to really warm, including some cold days and chilly winds.

My mom would be proud.

Late night packing

Last night we finally started to collect the gears and clothes for the trip. Easier said than done. To be able to travel comfortably we naturally wanted to reduce the number and weight of the items, but since we are traveling in various temperatures and with two small kids, a good median is hard to find. To be honest, this created some tension, but after two hours planning and hundreds of trips to the closets and cupboards, we finally made it!

On the floor you can see the result, which represent approximately 95% of our stuff. For sure we will realise, that we forgot something but that’s part of the game. We replace it, if needed or learn to deal with out it.

Now we just need to get them in to our bags and we are good to go.

Chapter 0

It was about mid June in Finland when we decided to take some time off from work, rent our house and pack the bags for a longer journey. Now we are really doing it and on Friday we start the first phase of the 4 month long trip.
